Film And English Literature BA (Hons)

This BA (Hons) in Film and English Literature degree allows you to pursue your interest in two of society's most popular art forms.

Be inspired by the powerful ways in which both disciplines shape our thoughts, feelings, emotions, and society in general. Central to this cross-disciplinary degree is the development of your understanding and awareness of the rich possibilities of film and literature when placed in dialogue.

In Literature, alongside the Classics, you can study genres like Gothic, children’s fiction, or dystopian literature. In Film, gain a solid theoretical grounding and historical understanding of film looking at key moments in film history which have helped to shape film as we know it today. You will analyse specific films and filmmakers to show how themes like gender, sexuality, race, class, ideology and history are portrayed.

As well as field trips to the film showings, recitals, and art galleries, there’ll be opportunities to attend master classes and hear directly from filmmakers, visiting creative writers, and industry professionals.

Learning how literary pieces and media productions are created broadens your critical awareness and creative repertoire and encourages you to find new ways of self-expression. You will develop a range of transferrable skills that will be highly attractive to future employers. Critical and creative thinking, teamwork, communication, interpretation, and research, among them.

The final-year project offers an opportunity to demonstrate how your creativity and interests have progressed. You can choose to do a project in either Film or English Literature.
