This Welsh and Philosophy, Ethics and Religion degree gives the chance to indulge your current passions for literature, culture and society, while finding new interests along the way.

At Bangor University, academic studies of the Welsh language and Welsh literature are broad and varied. Your language studies cover its history and development, social context, grammar, and vocabulary. Your journey through Welsh literature takes you from its historical beginnings in the Middle Ages, right through to early modern and contemporary Welsh literature. Developing valuable critical thinking and analytical skills, you’ll be introduced to practices of literary criticism through detailed studies of historical and modern poems and individual prose pieces.

Studying Philosophy, Ethics and Religion can shed light on the beliefs, morals, motivations, actions and spirituality of people the world over. You will examine beliefs and traditions that shape people’s identity, their behaviour and its impact on society.

A big advantage of the degree is the extent of personalisation allowed through a wide choice of optional modules. You can explore Welsh politics and different periods of history, or focus on creative and cultural aspects, such as philosophy, literary genres, creative writing, and modern Welsh theatre.

Depending on the modules you choose, you can enjoy debate and discussion with novelists, poets, dramatists, editors, and producers. Some of the more vocational and professional modules offer the chance to gain work experience in Welsh-speaking environments or engage with representatives from businesses who operate through the medium of Welsh.

Studying Philosophy, Ethics and Religion trains you intellectually to understand and solve problems through the interpretation of a host of different primary and secondary sources of information, written and otherwise. Our teaching and assessments are purposefully designed in ways to develop your professional and personal skills. You will meet and speak to people who hold the beliefs or question the ethics you are learning about.
