一、专业介绍

美国的运筹学Operations Research 是STEM专业之一。运筹学是近代应用数学的一个分支，主要是用于解决现实生活中的复杂问题，特别是改善或优化现有系统的效率。研究运筹学的基础知识包括矩阵论、随机过程、离散数学和算法基础等。而在应用方面，多与仓储、、物流、算法等领域相关。与应用数学、工业工程、计算机科学等专业密切相关。运筹学是在实行管理的领域，运用数学方法，对需要进行管理的问题统筹规划，做出决策的一门应用科学。

运筹学作为一门用来解决实际问题的学科，在处理千差万别的各种问题时，一般有以下几个步骤:确定目标、制定方案、建立模型和制定解法。随着科学技术和生产力的发展，运筹学已渗入到很多领域，发挥着越来越重要的作用。运筹学本身也在不断发展，涵盖线性规划、非线性规划、整数规划、组合规划、图论、网络流、决策分析、排队论、可靠性数学理论、库存论、博弈论、搜索论以及模拟等分支。

二、运筹学就业前景

生物统计学家、计算机科学家、保险业者、保险经纪人、金融分析师、审计师、精算师、电脑工程师/系统分析师、数学家等。像大型企业、政府部门或者军队这样的复杂组织需要将其物力及人力进行最有效的整合利用，从而达到所制定的目标。

一般来说, 运筹学是寻找针对复杂项目的多套解决方案。美国劳工数据调查局指出，随着越来越多的用人企业倾向去雇佣拥有商务管理、计算机科学等相关学科的双学位毕业生，该领域的就业情况比较乐观。 美国的运筹学就业职位通常分为：data analyst， Statistician，这两个方向偏统计；data scientist，research scientist偏business。

三、美国运筹学专业核心课程

      复变函数、应用概率论、微分方程、抽象代数、微积分、算法与编程、偏微分方程、定量分析、高等代数、数理统计、数学分析。

      运筹学是近代发展起来的一门学科，它包含了管理和数学工具两大类应用，可以说是一门极具实际应用的学科，那么申请运筹学中，最重要的两点便是：相关研究经历、相关专业背景。

l  Master of Science in Operations Research (MSOR)

The Master of Science in Operations Research (MSOR) is a 30-credit program for students to concentrate in areas such as mathematical programming, stochastic models, and simulation, through domain specific courses in logistics, supply chain management, revenue management, financial engineering, risk management, entrepreneurship, and general management.

There are six concentrations: (1) Financial and Managerial Applications; (2) Business Analytics; (3) Entrepreneurship and Innovation; (4) Logistics and Supply Chain Management; (5) Optimization and (6) Decision Risk Analysis.

l  Application

Completed applications must contain the following:

ü  Completed online application form

ü  Three (3) letters of recommendation

ü  Official Graduate Record Examination (GRE) General Test scores, sent from ETS. Scores are valid for five (5) years. Institution code is (2111); there is no Department code.

ü  Personal statement

ü  Resume or curriculum vitae

ü  Non-refundable application fee ($85)

ü  GPA:  3.0 (out of 4) GPA is preferred. Most successful applicants have a GPA higher than 3.0. 

ü  TOEFL 99, Is 6.5

ü  Pre-requisites

All applicants to all our graduate programs should have a solid foundation in mathematics, including multivariate calculus, linear algebra (MATH V2010 or its equivalent) and probability and statistics (IEOR E3658 & IEOR E4307, IEOR E4150 or their equivalent). Some programming proficiency is desirable, such as Python, R, etc.
